Tools for Conversational Language or Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS)
- Symbol-supported classroom materials such as communication cards/books, flashcards, word walls, worksheets, vocabulary cards, supported books and texts
- Communicating with the wider school community with adapted, notes home, newsletters, signage, and websites
Tools for Supporting Academic Language or Cognitive Academic Language
Proficiency (CALP)
- Adapted and adapting texts such as: scaffolded books for self-selected reading, symbol-supported curricular texts, and ESL strategies applied to e-text readers
- Supported writing with symbol-supported word processors, writing grids, word prediction tools, supporting internet writing and publishing (Web 2.0)
